Procession creates opportunities for Angelenos from areas surrounding the Los Angeles River to share their experiences of the channelized river and how its encasement in concrete has impacted cultural practice and legacy. These questions and stories, collected as interviews on the occasion of Procession itself, serve as a suggested framework for inviting diverse public voices to share their own river stories.
Developed in partnership with the LA Public Library, this component of Procession will be included in the library’s TheirStory.IO oral history archive, slated to launch in late 2023. Including first-hand narratives in public archives is a critical step towards democratizing the knowledge on which history is written.
